World In Sound  The Flying Eyes (US-BT,2009)***'/****

The voice and singing of The Flying Eyes more often but not always has something of Jim Morrison, when heading towards more bluesrock inspirations. But the band shows much more than that, with a good live energy, and with a rather trippy stage like effect and well produced arrangements (occasionally acoustic elements and a cello arrangements were included). The music would have been a mixture of bluesrockers with an injection of acid rock jammed riffs, but then, slower moody parts of psychedelic vibrations (like contributions with organ) are adapted into it as well. I came back to the music a couple of times, never takes me too long before imagining them in a convincing stage setting.

World In Sound  Samsara Blues Experiment : Long Distance Trip (D,2009)***°/****

Samsara Blues Experiment continues to sound groovy in various ways into their jams, with the best support of the right accents of doom bass rocking, from echoing, bubbling, sliding and wah-wahing electric guitars with some great solos nested, balancing between doom hard rockish modes over moody, endless psychedelic drives sometimes. There is occasional use of acoustic guitars or spacey keyboards. The tougher parts have post-rock vocals, fitting well with their voices. As intros and outros some sitar is added too. Convincing because of its relaxed change and building up well its different elements.

The band was founded in 2007 by the lead guitarist/singer Christian Peters of Terraplane.

Drag City  Rangda : False Flag (US,2009)**'

This music is wrong, totally wrong. Rangda is wrong. Rangda is the Balinese equivalent of Kali, a sort of evil witch goddess. “The Wrong flag” is the title of the album. Enough of serious shit ? Richard Bishop returns to the dark side (as a new alternative where to go to after his previous starting point band Sun City Girls), with Rangda, with alternative wildness, with a drummer (Chris Corsano) whose arms are like washing machines on several degrees of heating and a second guitarist (Ben Chasney). Tsunamini’s surfing by drowning numbers. This ain’t no too specific particular mode or inspiration, but with such bits of recognisable elements it still disturbs the clarity of mind with loudness and distortion by playing more. But then, two calmer tracks are in it as well, while the ears peep after the haze, this is desicrptive. How the alternative can make you relax and take off tension, no matter if playing loud or moodily smoothly. On the last track, the two guitars improvise endlessly, reminding us how Ben Chasney came from like-minded fleeing areas with guitars, like those sometimes on Six Organs of Admittance or sporadically on Comets on Fire. Steam engines coming back to a halt.

Trail Rec.  Beyond-O-Matic : Time To Get Up (US,rec.2002-2003,pub.2010)***°

This SF based basically spacerock band had released some albums already some years ago (1997,2002,2003), on their latest unreleased recording they had expanded this with lots of extra ideas bringing them into a next dimension worth discovering, but they never managed to release this latest recording up to now. From where the group comes from, from trance-inducing jam-psych improvisation can be heard on several of these tracks, expanding its form with spontaneity. It is especially absolutely successful in the first two tracks where they go beyond all that and they add a new extra depth and inspiration with ideas to remember. The first song, “Plague of bliss” is great because of its song lead with emotional singing, echoing guitar and beautiful stretched emotionality. The second track, “Hawaiian Lady” is strong for various reasons. First success is the combination of analogue synths with electric guitar, improvising beautifully in balance. The song part starts as if improvised on a 70s disco hit into psychedelic realms, also interesting for its rhythm use. Then the track stretches with its instrumental part much further with a jazz-psych like improvisation. A really attractive voice, really. This great drumming can be heard on other tracks too. Besides, they are with two drummers, which enriches their fundamental core. The next couple of tracks were more of a tranced nature and approach with more focus on the psychedelic jam. This is fine too, but it is the song with psych accompaniment which gave them something special, something extra, which especially in the two earliest tracks gave them also a successful retro touch, strechted to its limit.

World In Sound      Gunslingers : Manifesto Zero -MCD/LP- (F,2010)****'

Some heavy music surprised me again with another combination of styles that perhaps hasn’t been tried before or just comes as a spontaneous crossboarded wild expression. With distorted trash-voodoo-punk-a-billy vocals and up tempo rhythms couldn’t have been another great live act and trash’n roll energy, Gunslingers approach doesn’t stop there. While the rhythmical fundaments are motherfucker dances for punks, a public for fans of Cramps mixed with Stooges, the electric guitars add mixer rambling hammering elements, with up and down chords, wah-wahs and distortions, add the psychedelic element to it with interesting musicality. Strange that guitars are mixed more to the front than bass creating a different unusual aspect than as being just for rock’n roll. “Condor Radiant Spawn” starts at most like a rock’n roller but also this becomes psychedelic being played with distortion with a tribal warhead affection to the instrument. Very good stuff ! Makes me like loud music once more, for this is crafty heaviness with a strong individual distinction of power.

PS. Gregory Raimo had a solo release on the same label before under the project name of GR and the Fullblown Expansion (review on next page).
