Black Rills Rec.

Exit (1975-1979,re.2008)****+**°°
The unusual thing about Exit’s LP is that this is sophisticated progressive rock, with a classical controlled structure and so with compositional knowledge and ambition, but then played with a certain simplicity and thinness or even young “rawness”, which also makes this album attractive and rather unique in a way, also for leaving out any intellectualised exaggerations of ideas in its ambitious concept. It is as if a teenage young at heart easiness to perform is combined with a well matured bigger compositional picture, in a good balance. The drums themselves for instance, different to a usual progressive rock band, could fit more for a garage band approach, while the skills performed on them are more appropriate. There are good organ solos too with nice sounds of fuzzing analogue synth sounds. The bonus tracks, some from live recordings (well enough recorded) give or let more room to the rocking improvised and simpler nature over more prepared structure. There still is a very nice surprise of a more jazzrock/Canterbury styled longer improvisation, led by electric piano with guitars. A nice compilation and qualitative album discovery.
